How a Transmission Fluid Exchange Works
A Hyundai transmission fluid exchange is a form of preventative maintenance that involves replacing only a portion of the old transmission fluid with new fluid. It can be performed much faster than a full transmission flush and change out, which is often done more to fix an actual problem with your transmission (sometimes the problem is with the fluid itself while other times it is flushed so the mechanic can work more easily on the transmission itself). A full flush also entails forcing cleaning chemicals through the system to clear out any lingering build-up and debris, which sounds nice but can actually cause some unnecessary wear and tear, so it should only be done if your transmission actually needs it.
When You Should Get a Transmission Fluid Exchange?
It's a good idea to have your Hyundai transmission fluid checked about every six months. If issues are noticed - clouding or darkening, debris, low levels, etc. - then a Hyundai transmission fluid exchange should be performed (if the problem appears to be getting worse over time, then a full flush and change out may be recommended). Regardless, regular transmission fluid exchanges as preventative maintenance should be done about every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.
Signs of Transmission Trouble
Many drivers make the mistake of not getting transmission fluid exchanges promptly, and not doing so can lead to problems with their transmission. If you notice any of the following signs, it's time to bring your Hyundai in for a transmission inspection.
- Difficulty staying in gear
- Slow/poor shifting ability
- Grinding, vibrating, or whirring noises, especially while shifting
- Dripping fluid beneath your vehicle
- Burning smell
- Engine is revving too loudly
