What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?
When the check engine light in your vehicle comes on, it means that the ECU (engine control unit), which monitors various engine functions, has found that something is not working the way it should. It could be any of a number of problems, so the ECU will store a code pointing to the problem.
What Should I Do if the Check Engine Light Comes On?
If your vehicle's check engine light comes on, you should bring your vehicle to Hyundai Del Rio for a check engine light diagnosis. Our technicians will hook your Hyundai up to a code reader to help us figure out exactly where the problem lies.
How Urgent Is the Check Engine Light?
If the check engine light is solid, it's important that you get it checked out soon, but it's most likely not an emergency. We recommend that you finish driving to your destination and then check your gas cap once you've parked. This is because a loose gas cap can cause the light to come on. If tightening the cap doesn't help, you should schedule an appointment.
However, a flashing check engine light is a different story. This means that there's a more serious issue -- generally a misfiring engine. This can damage or destroy the catalytic converter, causing massive and expensive damage. If the check engine light flashes, we recommend that you pull over as soon as you can safely do so, shut off the engine, and call for a tow truck.
